Richard Morgan epic fantasy ‘The Steel Remains’: teaser text released

Posted in: Press Room on 22nd October 2007 by UKSFBN admin

A while ago, Richard Morgan announced that for his next novel he'd be making something of a departure from the high-octane, adrenaline-fulled action-sf that has become the hall-mark of his five novels to-date, and would be setting out in a new direction; embarking on a work of epic fantasy. Switching genres tends to be an unusual move for a UK-based author, so this is a development that we've been keeping our eye on with interest.

His UK publisher, Gollancz Books, has just released a page or two of teaser text into the wild which suggests that, far from turning his back on his hallmark dark, gritty, visceral prose and themes of conspiracy, betrayal, honour and retribution, he'll be bringing the same worldview that characterises his Takeshi Kovacs and Karl Marsalis works to bear on his new subject matter... with what could turn out to be extremely interesting results, as far as this dark, gritty, epic / heroic fantasy fan is concerned.

Gollancz editor Simon Spanton on the Future Classics promotion

Posted in: Press Room on 6th September 2007 by UKSFBN admin

Last month saw the launch of a new promotion by Gollancz Books here in the UK: their Future Classics range. They've re-packaged eight current titles by some of the biggest names on their list - Stephen Baxter, Greg Bear, Greg Egan, Paul J. McAuley, Richard Morgan, Christopher Priest, Alastair Reynolds and Dan Simmons - with all-new cover art.

The new covers are certainly impressive. All eight are included in the article below, but to be honest the jpeg images really don't do them justice at all. For instance, Paul McAuley's Fairyland is printed with an iridescent ink, giving the patterning a holographic feel, Alastair Reynolds' Revelation Space has a semi-mirrored finish with an embossed pattern, and the raised patterning on Stephen Baxter's Evolution cover is actually felt-textured.

The new designs are only intended to run for the duration of the promotion and then while stocks last; the revamped imagery won't be replacing the books' current covers in the long-run, and Gollancz won't be extending the concepts for any of the other titles in the relevant authors' series. Intrigued by the thinking behind the stand-alone concept, we sent an email to Gollancz editorial director Simon Spanton and asked him a few questions about the Future Classics.

Richard Morgan West Coast US Tour, July 23rd - 29th

Posted in: UKSFBN Talks To, What's On on 15th July 2007 by UKSFBN admin

'Thirteen' by Richard K. Morgan - Click for ordering info from Amazon.comRichard Morgan's new novel, Black Man (UK) / Thirteen (US) has been out for just over a month in the US (two months in the UK) and it's certainly made the reviewers think; reactions have focused on the political, racial and social elements of the book's considerable layer of subtext, whilst acknowledging that this is still very much an action novel in the vein of Morgan's earlier Takeshi Kovacs novels and Market Forces, the deeply satirical bastard offspring of Mad Max and The Office.

Morgan will be jetting to the US next weekend for a mini-tour that takes in several major cities on the Pacific coast (or the 'Rim States', as they have become in Black Man / Thirteen). We dropped Richard a line to quickly ask him about the tour and his next book project; a (planned so far) three-volume fantasy saga entitled Land Fit For Heroes (tour dates follow at the end of the article).

Interzone #211Issue #211 (July/Aug 2007) of Interzone, the UK's longest-running science fiction magazine, will be a Michael Moorcock special and goes on sale on July 12th.

TTA Press tells us: "Interzone #211's striking new cover design starts with Richard Marchand's 'Lunar Flare' and leads with a special feature on Michael Moorcock, the writer described by the late Angela Carter as 'a lord of misrule, whose work is the nearest thing we have in English to a never-ending carnival.'"

Richard Morgan on new novel Black Man

Posted in: UKSFBN Talks To on 19th March 2007 by UKSFBN admin

Brit SF-noir author Richard Morgan's new novel, Black Man is a skillful blend of investigative drama, serial killer thriller and high-octane science fiction action-blockbuster. It's driven by incredibly strong characterisation and a multi-layered plot that takes on a wide range of sociological and psychological themes. And without a doubt it's his strongest novel to-date.

While the book isn't published until May 17th, I managed to get my hands on an advanced reading copy and, having enjoyed the book immensely, I thought I'd strike while the iron was hot and ask Mr Morgan a few questions about some of the ideas he's chosen to explore in the book.
