Manga artists signing, Orbital Manga, London, February 23rd

'The Mammoth Book of Best New Manga' ed. by Ilya - Click for ordering info from Amazon.co.ukEmily Man, from comics store Orbital Manga of Covent Garden, London, has been in touch to tell us about a launch event and competition that they're organising to mark the launch of The Mammoth Book of Best New Manga on February 23rd from 12.00 to 2.00 p.m.

Emily tells us: "Manga artists Karen Rubins, Chie Kutsuwada, Nana Li and John A Short will be at orbital Manga to sign copies of The Mammoth Book of Best New Manga and the first ten customers to buy both volumes one and two will also receive a free Manga illustration drawn and signed on the day by one of the artists!"

Detail: We've been reliably informed that the unabridged audio download edition of Iain M. Banks' brand new Culture novel, Matter is already available for download from Apple's iTunes store - in advance of the book's official print publication date of February 7th - priced £21.95.

There will also be an abridged audio CD edition [Amazon] available from February 7th, as well as the hardcover edition [Amazon], published by Orbit Books at £18.99, although the usual sort of online discounts may well apply to these latter two editions...

[+] Edit, 04.02.08 DaveH points out, via the comments (below) that there's also an unabridged version available via www.Audible.co.uk, priced £17.50, although that will involve downloading yet another bit of proprietary software...

Manga night at Forbidden Planet International, Belfast, February 6th

Detail: The Belfast branch of Forbidden Planet International will be hosting a manga night on Wednesday February 6th from 7.00 to 9.00 p.m. and Joe Gordon of FPI Blog Log fame says: "A representative from Tokyopop will be coming along and there will be games (including some Wii fun), competitions, giveaways and I'd imagine there has to be some cosplay because how can you have a manga night without cosplay?

"All manga in the store will be on sale at 10% off during the event. Tickets are available from the store (52-54 Ann Street, Belfast, phone 028 9043 8744) for the tiny sum of £1 - contact the branch for details."

Robert V.S. Redick debut scoops February ‘08 promo-double

Detail: John Jarrold, of the John Jarrold Literary Agency has announced a major boost for the debut novel by one of his clients, American author Robert V.S. Redick, which will be published by Gollancz Books early next year.

John says: "The Red Wolf Conspiracy [Amazon] has been confirmed as Waterstone’s Fantasy and SF Book of the Month for February 2008. It will also be that month's Main Selection for the Fantasy and SF Book Club."

Detail: To mark the publication of Fatal Revenant [Amazon], the second installment in Stephen Donaldson's current series The Last Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, Waterstone's are holding an online giveaway, with 500 (yes, five hundred) copies of part one, The Runes of the Earth [Amazon], up for grabs.

Heffers 3rd Science Fiction & Fantasy Evening CANCELLED

Detail:We've had a note from Heffers Bookshop in the Grafton Centre, Cambridge, to say that they've unfortunately had to cancel their 3rd Science Fiction and Fantasy Evening, which was scheduled for Tuesday 30th October.

UK manga publishers tell UK retailers: “Stock more manga!”

Detail: Galley Cat reports on an item published in the Bookseller in which UK retailers have apparently been warned that they aren't taking manga seriously enough, and that the growth in shelf-space is lagging far behind the growth in both demand and supply; presumably to the benefit of online retailers.

Our good pal George Walkley of Orbit Books, who recently announced a UK distribution deal for Yen Press titles commented: "In any of the major chains, manga is being under-cooked in terms of space."

Detail: UK retailer Waterstone's will be selling an exclusive limited edition of Adam Roberts' new novel, Splinter, which is due to be published by Solaris Books next month. The limited edition is a slip-cased hardcover set of Splinter, accompanied by a matching hardback edition of Jules Verne's Off on a Comet, the classic novel that inspired Splinter, which has been extensively re-edited and re-translated by Adam Roberts. The set goes on sale on September 3rd, priced at a very reasonable £20.00.

Waterstone’s launches online petition to Save Harry Potter

Rowling - Click for ordering info from Amazon.co.ukAs reported on The Bookseller this morning, UK bookselling chain Waterstone's has launched a Save Harry campaign to try to persuade Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling to write more books set in the H.P. universe.

The chain hopes that fans will be persuaded to sign their online petition at www.saveharrypotter.co.uk. The site proclaims: "There has never been a place like Hogwarts. There has never been a writer like JK Rowling. And there has never, ever been a character like Harry Potter. Millions, perhaps billions of us love reading his adventures, and we never want them to end."
