Detail: Podcaster Tony Smith tells us: "StarShipSofa, in conjunction with the British Science Fiction Association, is bringing you all five of the short stories that have been shortlisted for the 2007 BSFA Award for Best Short Story, in audio narrated format for FREE.

"Starting Monday 10th March - and therefore in plenty of time for you to listen to all five stories well in advance of voting at Eastercon - StarShipSofa will upload one of the narrated stories each day. First off will be Chaz Brenchley narrating his own nominated story, 'Terminal'."

UK-based Podcaster Tony Smith has been in touch to introduce us to his long-running show StarShipSofa, which puts out a mix of author profiles, interviews and narrated short fiction from some of the very biggest and brightest stars in the genre firmament.

Tony told us: "For two years now I've been putting out a weekly show on SF literature. Each week I will take a SF author, either one of the new writers (Iain M. Banks, Charles Stross etc) or one of the golden greats (Heinlein, Moorcock, Vonnegut) and do a in depth show on that particular writer, looking at their lives and work.

BSFA marks 50th anniversary year with £500 short story competition

2008 is the 50th anniversary year of the British Science Fiction Association and as part of their year-long celebrations, they've announced the launch of a short story competition for writers from the UK and Ireland, with a £500 first prize for the bets example, as decided by their illustrious panel of judges.

The BSFA's Martin McGrath has been in touch with the pertinent details: "To mark the anniversary we're publishing Celebrations: an original anthology of British SF featuring some of the biggest names in the genre. We've also got the 50th Anniversary BSFA Awards at Eastercon - as well as a range of panels looking back over the last 50 years of fandom at the Con - picking this year's best novel and a 'retro' award for 50 years ago.

"Then there's the new BSFA website, our AGM will feature a panel of fans who were around at the founding of the BSFA, we're having a birthday party in November and we're running a 50th Anniversary short story competition.

Robert Holdstock interview at BSFA meeting, London, January 23rd

Detail: Robert Holdstock, author of the Merlin Codex series, the classic British mytho-fantasy novels Mythago Wood, Lavondyss, and many other novels, will be the guest of the British Science Fiction Society at their monthly meeting on January 23rd.

The venue is the upstairs room at The Star Tavern, 6 Belgrave Mews West, London. The evening starts at 6.00 p.m. (although BSFA members will be gathering in the downstairs bar from 5.00 p.m.) and Robert will be interviewed by Paul Kincaid about his life and work. The event finishes at 9.00 p.m.

Steph Swainston BSFA interview - video online

Detail: UK author Steph Swainston was the guest of the BSFA at their open night in August, where she was interviewed by John Berlyne. Steph dropped us a line to tell us: "There is a video clip available of my BSFA interview on blip.tv.

"I'm talking about my novel The Modern World, but also about the whole Castle world, how the ideas of immortality and Insects came about, and how the Castle world differs from other fantasy."

Iain M Banks BSFA talk, London, November 28th

Detail: Iain M Banks - an author who surely needs no introduction - will be the guest of the British Science Fiction Association from 6.00 to 10.00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 28th at Lecture Theatre 1 Physics, Imperial College, London.

Mr Banks will be interviewed by the BSFA's Farah Mendlesohn, and there will be an opportunity for attendees to pose their own questions and get their Banks books signed.

Detail:Fantasy author Steph Swainston has been in touch to tell us about the following imminent appearance: "I am the guest writer at the next BSFA (British Science Fiction Association) meeting on Wednesday 22nd August in London. I will be reading from The Modern World and John Berlyne (of SFRevu fame) will be interviewing me.

"The event is at The Star Tavern, 6 Belgrave Mews West, London, SW1X 8HT. Meet downstairs from 5:30, upstairs from 6, interview starts around 7pm. These events are good fun and you'll have plenty of chance to chat to me after the interview finishes. Entrance is free and all welcome. So, if you're in the area, please come along!
