Gollancz Books to publish William Heaney autobiography

Posted in: Press Room on 27th February 2008 by UKSFBN admin

Detail: Gollancz Editor Simon Spanton dropped the following cryptic note into our mailbox this week: "William Heaney is a fraud. A charming fraud but a fraud nevertheless. He writes poetry so that a more attractive friend can pass it off as his own, he produces fake Jane Austen first editions so that he can fleece foolish an greedy Americans. He also believes he can see demons. He drinks too much wine.

"We have just signed up William’s autobiography (not quite as much of a departure as you might think for Gollancz). Just who does William think he is? You can read his excessively jaundiced but rather entertaining thoughts on the business of being a 'real' writer, as well learning a little about wine from someone who is at least a real drinker at his blog: butforthegrape.livejournal.com."

Joe Abercrombie announces new two-book deal with Gollancz

Posted in: Press Room on 14th August 2007 by UKSFBN admin

Detail: One of the rising stars of the UK fantasy scene, Joe Abercrombie, has just announced a new two-book deal with his UK publisher, Gollancz. Joe says the deal is for: "...two stand-alone books set in the same world as The First Law... They'll feature some new settings, some new characters, and a few well-loved (by me anyway) minor characters from the trilogy in more central roles...

"The first is going to be called Best Served Cold, is set in the warring city-states of Styria, and, in case you hadn't guessed, is about revenge. It's largely planned out and the first couple of chapters drafted. If forced to sum it up I'd probably call it a fantasy thriller, light on the magic and heavy on the blood, treachery and poison, with the usual hefty portions of dark grey characters and black humour."

Kim Stanley Robinson's next sf novel will be The Galileans, set in Renaissance Italy and centering on the life and theories of Galileo.

"My research for The Years of Rice and Salt included lots of reading about the birth of science," said Robinson. "I learned more than I could use in that book, so I thought it would be good to return to the matter, as being crucial to society today and, if I wrote about it, a particular kind of science fiction. Galileo is central to the scientific revolution, and also he gave me a number of science-fictional angles from which to approach the topic. He's a great character."

Jay Amory has a gripe about most fiction for teens

Posted in: UKSFBN Talks To on 24th October 2006 by Sandy Auden

First-time YA author Jay Amory has a few grumbles about Teen Fiction. "It's the adult characters!" he says, "They're only there to be ignored. They introduce the young protagonist into the action then step back and play no further part, except maybe at the end. That doesn't strike me as true. Drama-wise, it helps to have your teenage heroes and heroines adrift for a while, developing their skills and learning to fend for themselves, but not for the entire book. YA authors do everything they can to remove grownups from the mix, but that, to me, hits an unrealistic note, and I prefer a bit of realism in my fantasy."
