M. John Harrison wins 2008 Philip K. Dick Award

This year's Philip K. Dick Award for "the distinguished original science fiction paperback published for the first time during 2007 in the U.S.A." has gone to Nova Swing by M. John Harrison.

The results were announced on Friday evening at evening at Norwescon in SeaTac, Washington. Harrison was one of two UK authors on this year's shortlist, the other being Adam Roberts for Gradisil.

Albedo One announces 2008 Aeon Award for short fiction

Frank Ludlow of Albedo One, Ireland's premiere magazine of speculative fiction, has been in touch to tell us that they've just launched the 2008 International Aeon Award short fiction contest.

Frank has all the details: "The contest is open to submissions of up to 8,000 words (no minimum word limit) in any speculative fiction genre, from Fantasy and Science Fiction to Horror or anything in-between or unclassifiable. The judges have very broad tastes in this regard.

Germany’s Deutsche Phantastik Preis Awards for 2007 announced

Detail: The Deutsche Phantastik Preis Awards, were announced on Saturday October 13th at the Buchmesse-Convention near the book-fair in Frankfurt. The organisers tell us that "the awards are now nearly ten years old and are one of the three big prestigious awards in Germany, recognized by the big publishers and fans alike in Germany."

2006-07 Aeon Award winner announced at Eurocon, Copenhagen

Detail: The winner of this year's Aeon Award for short fiction was announced at Eurocon 2007 in Copenhagen. The winner, chosen by grand judge Ian Watson from the top six shortlisted stories, was a story called 'Angelus' by Nina Allan.

Ian Watson commented that the story was "beautifully written and paced and enigmatic yet in an entirely lucid way". The wrinner receives €1,000 in prize money, and the story will be published in the 34th issue of Albedo One magazine. The second and third-placed stories, 'Isle of Beauty' by Larry Taylor and 'The White Knight' by Devon Code-McNeil will also be published in the magazine.

Hal Duncan wins Gaylactic Spectrum Award for ‘Vellum’

Doris Lessing wins 2007 Nobel Prize for Literature

Detail: British author Doris Lessing has been awarded the 2007 Nobel Prize in Literature. Her best-known works include The Golden Notebook, Memoirs of a Survivor and The Summer Before the Dark, and also wrote several science fiction novels, including the five book series Canopus in Argos: Archives, which was published in the UK between 1979 and 1983.

Lessing was philosophical about the award, having been told 40 years ago that the Nobel committee didn't particularly like her: "They can't give a Nobel to someone who's dead so I think they were probably thinking they had better give it to me now before I popped off," said the 88 year old author.

British Fantasy Awards 2007 - Winners Announced

The Winners of the 2007 British Fantasy Awards were announced during the award ceremony at the culmination of this year's Fantasycon, earlier this afternoon, in Nottingham, UK.

Master of Ceremonies Peter Crowther, of PS Publishing fame, provided the banter and sight-gags as he invited a string of guest presenters (including Chaz Brenchley masquerading as Chris Fowler, Chaz Brenchley as Chaz Brenchley, Mark Morris, Tim Lebbon, Sarah Pinborough, John Grant, Simon Clark, Steven Volk, Stephen Jones, Simon R. Green, Ramsey Campbell, Michael Marshall Smith and Jo Fletcher of Gollancz Books), onto the stage at the Britannia Hotel to announce the winners of the awards to a packed and eager roomful of fantasy and horror fiction fans.

Charles Stross wins 2007 Prometheus Award for libertarian fiction

Detail: Announced at Worldcon at the weekend and reported on by Charlie's Diary, Ansible, SFAwardsWatch.com, the Orbit Books website, the Forbidden Planet Blog Log and elsewhere, the winner of this year's Prometheus Award from the Libertarain Futurist Society is Charles Stross, for his novel Glasshouse [Amazon].

Hugo Award winners announced at Worldcon, Yokohama

Detail: The winners of this year's prestigious Hugo Awards were announced yesterday at the 65th World Science Fiction Convention in Yokohama, Japan. The top prize - for Best Novel - went to Rainbow's End [Amazon] by Vernor Vinge.

Website launch: Science Fiction Awards Watch

Detail: Cherly Morgan (former editor of the now defunct Emerald City web 'zine & blog) and Kevin Standlee have launched a new website, Science Fiction Awards Watch to track and report on the numerous genre fiction awards that are handed out every year. They're kicking off with build-up coverage to the 2007 Hugo Awards, which will be announced at the end of the month at the Yokohama Worldcon.

Morgan and Standlee hope that in time the site will grow into an information resource along the lines of the long-running Locus SF Awards Index and provide commentary, criticism and a forum for public debate. They also hope to expand the content of the site beyond the scope of book-based sf, fantasy and horror awards into other media, including film, TV and comics.

The Hugo Awards honor the best in written and dramatized science fiction and fantasy as well as other categories. This new site serves as the definitive site for information about the Hugo Awards, including historical winner and nominee lists, pictures of past Hugo Award trophies, information on how to nominate and vote for the Awards, and an explanation of the rules and procedures for the Award.

"Past winners of Hugo Awards include authors such as Isaac Asimov, Sir Arthur C. Clarke, Robert A. Heinlein, Philip K. Dick, Anne McCaffrey, William Gibson and Neil Gaiman. 2007 World Fantasy Award nominees announced

Detail: The shortlists for this year's prestigious World Fantasy Awards have been posted on Locus Online. The winners - decided by the WFA jury - will be announced at the 2007 World Fantasy Convention in Saratoga Springs. Many congratulations to all the nominees; particularly the British representatives on the list: Kim Newman (nominated for Best Novella), Geoff Ryman (Canadian, but long-time resident of London, nominated for Best Short Fiction), Susanna Clarke (nominated for Best Collection) and Edward Miller (nominated for Best Artist).
