Solaris to publish Ellen Datlow’s Poe-inspired fiction anthology

In a recent press release, Solaris Books have announced that they are delighted to have purchased a brand new anthology from one of genre fiction's leading editors, Ellen Datlow.
Solaris Books' Mark Newton tells us: "To coincide with the 200th anniversary of the birth of Edgar Allen Poe, Solaris are pleased to announce an anthology of remixed and reimagined tales inspired by his work and edited by multi-award winner, Ellen Datlow.
"Top genre names including Sharyn McCrumb, Lucius Shepard, Pat Cadigan and M. Rickert are lending their talent to this project, retelling such classics as 'The Fall of the House of Usher', 'The Tell-Tale Heart' and 'The Masque of the Red Death'. The anthology, simply titled Poe, will be published in both the US and UK, in January 2009.

Strong UK contributor line-up for Ash Tree’s ‘Exotic Gothic II’

Editor Danel Olson is currently working on Exotic Gothic II: New Tales of Taboo, the sequel to the anthology Exotic Gothic, which was published by Canadian independent Ash Tree Press in October 2007. The contributors list is still in the process of being finalised, but we understand there's likely to be a strong UK contingent in the final assortment.

Pantechnicon Magazine seeks submissions for first print anthology

Trudi says: "Stories must be in the SF/F/H genres, and of a standard that matches or surpasses what we would usually publish in the Magazine. Elastic Press announces 2008 publication schedule

Back before the seasonal break, Andrew Hook of award-winning UK independent publisher Elastic Press sent round details of his planned publication schedule for 2008.
So - with apologies for the late posting and no further ado - take it away, Andrew: "Andrew Humphrey's Other Voices will be published on February 1st. Five years ago we published Andrew's Open The Box [Amazon] to great acclaim, and this second collection will feature thirteen new stories with an introduction by Eric Brown and cover art by Nicola L Robinson.

From the mid-1960s onwards Haining edited or write over 200 books, the majority of which were genre fiction anthologies (see his bibliography at FantasticFiction.co.uk for more information), the most recent being the Mammoth Book of Modern Ghost Stories, published by Robinson in September 2007. He was awarded the British Fantasy Society's Karl Edward Wagner Award for services to genre fiction, in 2001.
There's a tribute to his life an work by friend and fellow bibliophile Steve Holland over at Holland's Bear Alley blog, which includes an interview he conducted with Haining in 1995, and Jack Adrian's obituary piece is online at news.independent.co.uk.

The latest publication from UK-based independent specialist publisher Tartarus Press is Strange Tales, Volume II. Edited by Rosalie Parker, the anthology includes stories by Joel Knight, Quentin S. Crisp, Katherine Haynes, Stephen Holman, Mark Valentine, Adam Golaski, Dale Nelson, Simon Strantzas, Anne-Sylvie Salzman, David Rix, Rhys Hughes, Angela Slatter, Barbara Roden, Roger Dunkley, Elizabeth Brown, Christopher Harman and Hilbourne Carlone.
Ray Russell of Tartarus has provided us with some background information: "A 'Strange Tale' is a short story that explores a fantastic idea, supernatural or psychological, with the intention of causing, through its own logical development, uncertainty or unease about that which the reader takes for granted.

New antho ‘The Black Book of Horror’ out now from Mortbury Press

Detail: The Black Book of Horror from Mortbury Press is described by the publisher as an "anthology in the grand tradition of British horror anthologies" and is on sale now. Editor Charles Black says: "In the '60s, '70s and '80s, Pan and Fontana both published long-running series of horror anthologies. Inspired by these books and the many anthologies, The Black Book of Horror is a ghoulish celebration of the macabre."
The anthology contains 18 tales ranging from the supernatural to the gruesome: "black magic, the dead, monstrous beasts, and things from beyond. There are tales that witness madness, and the evil that man is capable of." A full list of contributors can be found on the Mortbury Press website.

Pendragon Press launching New Writings antho at Fantasycon ‘07

Chris Teague, of UK independent publisher Pendragon Press, writes to tell us about a new short science fiction / fantasy / horror anthology that he'll be launching at this year's Fantasycon in Nottingham, over the weekend of September 21st to 23rd.
The anthology is called New Writings in the Fantastic, has been compiled by veteran author and editor John Grant (a.k.a. Paul Barnett) and will be: "A mammoth anthology of almost forty pieces of speculative fiction, featuring a wealth of new writing talent from around the world."

‘Falling From the Sky’: free pdf fiction anthology from Another Sky

Short fiction writer Stephen J. Anderson dropped us an email to let us know about a new anthology project that includes one of his pieces. Falling From the Sky features 37 writers from around the world, half a dozen of them (including Stephen) from the UK.
The anthology of "grit-lit, urban, surrealist, raw, outsider, bizarro, fringe, experimental" fiction is edited by Craig Quackenbush and published by US publishing house Another Sky Press. They've developed a business model that seeks to take advantage of online promotion and distribution in order to create additional audience for its titles. They describe the model as a "pro-artist, pro-audience system" that they call 'neo-patronage'.

Chaz Brenchley and Christine Poulson, Manchester Museum, May 19th

We've just found out about a horror fiction reading taking place in Manchester this weekend - on Saturday May 19th from 6.30 p.m. to be precise - in the Mummy Room of the Manchester Museum.
The occasion is 'Fright Night', which is taking place as part of La Nuit des Musées, "the night, every year, when museums across Europe open their doors late into the evening", and will be taking the form of a reception and reading, hosted by Manchester's own Comma Press, to mark the recent publication of their anthology of modern horror fiction, Phobic.
