UKSFBN currently in hibernation…
Posted in: Site Announcements on 8th May 2008 by UKSFBN admin
Dear Reader -
UK SF Book News has been put into hibernation and won't be updated for the foreseeable future.
The site may return in some form, at some point, but in the meantime, please visit one of the following rather excellent sf / fantasy / horror / comics & graphic novel news websites or blogs for all your genre fiction update needs:
- Ansible
- British Fantasy Society News
- British Science Fiction Association
- Forbidden Planet International Blog
- Irish SciFi News
- Locus Online
- Sci Fi Wire
- Science Fiction Awards Watch
- SF Scope
- SFX
And just in case the site doesn't come back any time soon, I'd like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all the publishers, authors, editors and creators who have given their time, their support and their books to the site (and its predecessor, The Alien Online) over the past few years.

UKSFBN WP upgrade progressing nicely…
Posted in: Site Announcements on 4th April 2008 by UKSFBN admin
Excuse the apparently random post, but I'm actually using it to test the functionality of a new plugin...
But while I'm here, I'm happy to report that the WP2.5 upgrade went without a hitch, the new template is looking good and I've been able to add in most of the additional functionality I was looking for without too much trouble.
Still a few more things to tweak though, so the site may be hidden behind the 'Maintenance Mode' screen for another day or two yet, unless you're one of our RSS-readers, in which case you should be able to see this message... in any case, the full site will be back before too long, all being well. :)

UKSFBN WP upgrade & functionality update in progress
Posted in: Site Announcements on 3rd April 2008 by UKSFBN admin
Dear Readers -
I'll be upgrading UK SF Book News to the latest version of Wordpress over the next couple of days.
For most of that time I'll be installing a holding page to let you know what's going on, but if you happen to notice any... oddness - categories shifting, layouts changing, broken bits & pieces - in the meantime, please do feel free to ignore it. It's all part of the upgrade process, and just means that everything is proceeding as planned. I hope.
All being well, the site should be back up and running by the end of the weekend, with all sorts of added functionality and interactivity. Wish me luck!
Cheers!

New formatting for UKSFBN Newsbite items
Posted in: Site Announcements on 5th August 2007 by UKSFBN admin
Dear readers -
Just a quick note to draw your attention to a new way of posting shorter items that we're trialling at the moment. You might have already noticed (unless you read the site on RSS feed only) that some of our recent items have been formatted with a dashed red border:
More info: Links to sources of further information.
Source: The source of the story.
The thinking here is that we'd like to post shorter items as frequently as we possibly can, rather than saving them for the round-up articles that we've run in the past. The major benefits are that we can post more content more quickly, and make it easier for other sites that want to link in to a specific item, rather than having to then direct their readers to search through a round-up for the relevant information.
The red border is to help differentiate newsbites from our longer and more detailed items - such as author interview pieces and press releases or articles with extra commentary or detail that we've added ourselves - which we will will continue to present in the standard format: a paragraph or two of introductory text and then a link to the main item so you can read the whole piece. That way, if you see an item with a red border, you know that it's a newsbite and there's no need to link through to get any more information, unless you want to visit the external websites that we've linked out to.
We hope that this will mean we'll be able to bring you even more UK SF Book News almost as soon as it's announced (well, we'll do our best, anyway...)
If you have a particularly strong opinion on the new formatting, either pro- or anti-, please do feel free to speak your piece in the comments.
Cheers!

Welcome to the new-look UK SF Book News
Posted in: Site Announcements on 5th April 2007 by UKSFBN admin
Hello -
Regular readers may have noticed a couple of changes to the site this morning. We do hope you like the new look, and the extra bits & pieces of functionality that we've included.
Apologies for the slight service break, but we're currently hard at work on a brand new version 2.0 of UKSFBookNews.
Things are progressing nicely and it shouldn't be too long before it's ready to go, so with any luck we'll be back later on in the week with a new look, some additional functionality, and a fresh batch of new and recent news items for you.
Thank you for bearing with us in the meantime and please feel free to add our RSS Feed to your reader (if you haven't done so already) to save you having to check back...
