Richard Morgan epic fantasy ‘The Steel Remains’: teaser text released

Posted in: Press Room on 22nd October 2007 by UKSFBN admin

A while ago, Richard Morgan announced that for his next novel he'd be making something of a departure from the high-octane, adrenaline-fulled action-sf that has become the hall-mark of his five novels to-date, and would be setting out in a new direction; embarking on a work of epic fantasy. Switching genres tends to be an unusual move for a UK-based author, so this is a development that we've been keeping our eye on with interest.

His UK publisher, Gollancz Books, has just released a page or two of teaser text into the wild which suggests that, far from turning his back on his hallmark dark, gritty, visceral prose and themes of conspiracy, betrayal, honour and retribution, he'll be bringing the same worldview that characterises his Takeshi Kovacs and Karl Marsalis works to bear on his new subject matter... with what could turn out to be extremely interesting results, as far as this dark, gritty, epic / heroic fantasy fan is concerned.

Here's a chunk of War Machine blurb to whet your appetite: "In a time of post-Singularity and FTL, the Helix War has raged across galaxies. Ex-soldier Keenan is now working as a private investigator on a planet at the peaceful fringes of the Tri-Gal. Since his family has died he's run up debts and is a heavy drinker, but he cannot refuse business.

However, for this case he must gather together his old military unit, a group who swore they'd never work together again..."

Doris Lessing wins 2007 Nobel Prize for Literature

Posted in: Press Room on 11th October 2007 by UKSFBN admin

Detail: British author Doris Lessing has been awarded the 2007 Nobel Prize in Literature. Her best-known works include The Golden Notebook, Memoirs of a Survivor and The Summer Before the Dark, and also wrote several science fiction novels, including the five book series Canopus in Argos: Archives, which was published in the UK between 1979 and 1983.

Lessing was philosophical about the award, having been told 40 years ago that the Nobel committee didn't particularly like her: "They can't give a Nobel to someone who's dead so I think they were probably thinking they had better give it to me now before I popped off," said the 88 year old author.

Detail: British fantasy writer Graham Edwards has dropped us a line to say: "I've just subjected my website - www.grahamedwardsonline.co.uk - to a major overhaul. Even after all these years I'm amazed how many people still still get in touch with me to ask about Dragoncharm [Amazon] and its sequels, so here it all is.

"I've included commentaries on all my fantasy novels, and on a batch of recently published short stories. There are even free extracts from the novels ready and eager to be downloaded. And a news section that will - I've promised myself - be updated more regularly than the old one!"
