‘Falling From the Sky’: free pdf fiction anthology from Another Sky
Posted in: Press Room on 6th July 2007 by UKSFBN admin
Short fiction writer Stephen J. Anderson dropped us an email to let us know about a new anthology project that includes one of his pieces. Falling From the Sky features 37 writers from around the world, half a dozen of them (including Stephen) from the UK.
The anthology of "grit-lit, urban, surrealist, raw, outsider, bizarro, fringe, experimental" fiction is edited by Craig Quackenbush and published by US publishing house Another Sky Press. They've developed a business model that seeks to take advantage of online promotion and distribution in order to create additional audience for its titles. They describe the model as a "pro-artist, pro-audience system" that they call 'neo-patronage'.
Stephen J. Anderson describes the system: "All of Another Sky's works can be read online for free, but can also be purchased in book form. The price of the book is set at a base to cover shipping, to which the purchaser can add whatever amount they like, in effect declaring how much they think the book is worth.
"All the profits are divided between the authors, and they retain all rights to their work. To-date, they have four works available for purchase, the latest of which is Falling From The Sky."
In short: you can download a copy of the anthology, read the whole thing at your leisure, and then if you enjoy it, you can make an 'honours system' style payment via the website.
If you're interested in finding out more, the Another Sky website contains plenty of info about Falling From the Sky as well as their mission statement and the neo-patronage business model.
