New Ken MacLeod SF novel due April ‘07 from Orbit

Posted in: UKSFBN Talks To on 30th January 2007 by Sandy Auden

Ken MacLeod has delivered his latest SF novel, The Execution Channel [Amazon], to Orbit Books UK, and we dropped him a line to see what else we could find out about his new work.

'The Execution Channel' by Ken MacLeod - Click for ordering info from Amazon.co.uk"It's set a few years in the future," MacLeod told us. "The war has spread across the Middle East and Central Asia. When a nuclear explosion devastates a huge USAF base in Scotland, James Travis sets out to find his daughter, who was in a protest camp outside the base and is now on the run. But Travis is on the run himself, and searching for an answer to the question everyone is asking: who caused the explosion, and what was it that exploded?

"As international tension racks up, conspiracy bloggers and freelance disinformation specialists fight an online war that shadows and foreshadows the real war to come, while each day's atrocities are broadcast on the Execution Channel."

The novel has been in progress over the last twelve months and was spookily echoing real-life. MacLeod admitted: "In the early stages I almost dissuaded myself from writing this novel at this time, because of current events, but I decided that its topicality was something that made it worth writing."

Near-future novels always come with their own set of problems, compared to far-future novels. "For one thing, " MacLeod said, "it's difficult when the near future could change at any moment. I decided not to include or imply a detailed timeline, or to specify the date in which it's set. There's another point I could make about how I worked around these problems, but it's something I'd rather the readers discovered for themselves. "

The Execution Channel will be published by Orbit Books UK on April 5th, 2007.
